BASE NOTE — EARTHY, SMOKY DEPTH IN THE FINAL DRY-DOWN

Vetiver — known as khus in India — is among the most complex single ingredients in perfumery. Gas chromatography analysis of a vetiver essential oil typically identifies over 150 separate compounds, with no single molecule dominating. The characteristic earthy, smoky, woody quality comes primarily from khusimol and a family of sesquiterpene alcohols — vetiverol, α-vetivone, β-vetivone — that together produce a scent profile unlike anything else in the natural world. Vetiver is extracted from the roots of the plant, which must be at least 18 months old before harvest. Haitian vetiver is considered the benchmark: volcanic soil, specific humidity, and manual harvesting produce roots with a cleaner, more mineral profile than other origins. Indian vetiver (khus) has a more complex, animalic character, historically used in traditional cooling systems and khus water. The molecule most responsible for vetiver's longevity is its complexity: with so many aromatic compounds present in different concentration levels, the scent unfolds slowly and continuously over hours. There is no "peak" — only gradual evolution. In AURĒ's Gravity, vetiver appears in the base alongside amberwood and dark musk. By the third hour, it has grounded the entire composition into something low, dry, and unmistakably present. At 42% extrait concentration, the vetiver base can hold for 6 to 8 hours after the top notes have fully evolved.
