HEART TO BASE NOTE — THE TRANSITION BETWEEN SWEETNESS AND WARMTH

The tonka bean is the seed of the Dipteryx odorata tree, native to South America. Its dominant aromatic compound — coumarin — is responsible for a scent profile that sits at the intersection of vanilla, almond, fresh hay, and warm tobacco. Coumarin was the first aromatic compound to be synthesised in a laboratory, by the British chemist William Henry Perkin in 1868, making it one of the founding molecules of modern synthetic perfumery. Tonka bean absolute has a deep, warm, slightly smoky quality that makes it an exceptional transitional note — it appears at the heart stage and carries through into the base, softening harder aromatic edges and adding a rounded warmth to the dry-down. In contemporary perfumery, tonka bean is frequently paired with vanilla to add complexity, or with woody notes to prevent them from reading as harsh. The coumarin content of natural tonka absolute is so high (up to 10% by weight) that strict regulatory limits apply in leave-on products — perfumers must work within IFRA guidelines for skin-safe formulation. AURĒ's formulations are IFRA certified, ensuring every coumarin-containing note is within safe skin application parameters. In Gravity, tonka bean works alongside bourbon vanilla in the heart — the two compounds amplify each other, creating the warm, sweet-but-not-cloying mid-stage that defines the fragrance's character from hour one to hour three.
