BASE NOTE — THE DRY, RESINOUS FOUNDATION

Amberwood is a perfumer's shorthand for a structured base accord that combines woody and amber facets — typically anchored by ambroxan, a synthetic molecule derived from ambrette seed. Ambroxan (also sold as Cetalox) is one of the most significant molecules in contemporary perfumery: it is responsible for the warm, woody, skin-like quality found in many modern prestige fragrances. Unlike natural amber — a fossilized resin whose scent is largely imagined since it has almost no odour — amberwood accords are real, stable, and highly controlled. Ambroxan has a peculiar selective anosmia: roughly 15–20% of people cannot smell it at normal concentrations, which is why some wearers find it subtle while others find it dominant. In high-concentration formulas like AURĒ's 42% extrait, ambroxan-forward accords deliver their full effect — the warm, almost skin-like drydown that makes a fragrance feel like a natural extension of the wearer. In AURĒ fragrances, amberwood forms the outermost base layer — the final 2–3 hours of projection, long after the heart notes have settled, leaving a quiet but persistent warmth.
